Development in East Norriton

There's a LOT of development in East Norriton - over 25 projects!   Why are we allowing every little spot to be filled up?  And the TRAFFIC impacts - with a lot of cars traversing our township and our own traffic growth - it's only going to get worse.  Contact your township elected officials and come to township meetings to express your concerns!

IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW...LOCAL DEVELOPMENT ISSUES WILL BE POSTED HERE

Public Meeting Notice: Times Herald March 2, 2010

DeKalb Street Two-Way Traffic Study. Notice is hereby given that the Municipality of Norristown will be holding a public meeting on Thursday March 18, 2010 at 6:00 pm., in the Community Room of the Montgomery County Human Services Center. 1430 Dekalb St., Norristown, PA 19401, to obtain views and comments from residents and businesses.                    (FYI East Norriton: This may open DeKalb Street both ways at Johnson Highway.)

***Here is a note from our East Norriton Township Manager, regarding this Dekalb Pike Study***

Deborah,

I am actually representing East Norriton Township as a member on the steering committee for this proposed study and have attended meetings at Norristown Borough Hall to discuss this matter. I also reported about this proposed study at the February 23rd Board of Supervisors meeting. This study was initiated by some businesses in Norristown hoping that a 2-way Dekalb Pike would generate more traffic along their store fronts. Norristown is beginning to explore this idea and is aware that there will be many obstacles to overcome.

At the steering committee meetings, I have conveyed that making Dekalb Street a 2-way street through Norristown would help East Norriton Township by relieving a significant amount of traffic off of Swede Road which is owned and maintained by the township. It may also help remove some traffic from the parallel streets to Swede and Route 202.

Again, Norristown is at the beginning of the process and is now looking to present the idea to the public on March 18th and solicit input/thoughts/suggestions from the general public. It will be an informal meeting where current conditions boards will be displayed and representatives from Norristown and the appointed traffic engineering firm will be there to answer any questions people may have.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the March 18th meeting, but after that meeting, the steering committee will meet again to review the outcome. After that steering committee meeting, I will again report back to the Board and Township at a public meeting.

I would encourage residents of East Norriton Township to attend to gain a better understanding of what is being proposed. Although turning Dekalb Street into a 2-way street is an interesting concept, there will be much opposition from the northern end properties in Norristown who will be significantly impacted with more traffic congestion. There are also major safety issues with the non-signalized intersections along this corridor.

I hope that I have been able to provide to you some information about the proposed study which I had conveyed at the public meeting.

Regards,
Don Delamater
Township Manager
